Can Formula Cause Baby Acne

What If Baby Acne Doesnt Clear Up

Breast Milk To Clear Acne?

If your babys break out just wont clear, you may be mistaking another skin condition for baby acne. Below are some various skin conditions that are similar to baby acne but require their own diagnosis and set of remedies.

  • Milia: These are tiny white bumps, similar looking to whiteheads, which appear on nose, chin, and cheeks of baby. Milia can be present from birth, unlike baby acne, which sets in later. It can also occur alongside baby acne as your babys skin adjusts to life outside the womb. It is more often caused by sloughed off skin cells that get trapped in the outer layer of dermis.
  • Heat Rash: While baby acne is on the face, heat rash tends to appear where the baby is clothed, including on the chest, stomach and neck, but also on the thighs and buttocks. Heat rash looks like a reddening of the skin with lots of tiny red bumps.
  • Baby Eczema: While it can look similar to baby acne, especially when it shows up on the cheeks, its trademark look is red, patchy and scaly dry skin. It is very common in babies, and can also pop up in high-friction areas, like the folds of those tiny little elbows and knees. Eczema can be caused by diet, lifestyle, gut flora imbalance, dryness and also by genetics, if a parent suffers from eczema.
  • Infection: If the bumps spread beyond face or if baby has a fever or cold symptoms, call your pediatrician immediately as these may be signs of an infection like roseola or RSV.

  • Milk spots, also know as milia, are nothing to worry about. In fact, around half of all newborns will develop them.

Milk spots are one of the most common skin conditions seen in newborns.

Although theyre essentially harmless, milk spots can be concerning for new parents as they appear in the first few weeks of a babys life. A combination of their colour and texture, or just the presence of them alone, often recalls warnings about baby rashes and the associated childhood illnesses in their minds.

To understand a little more about these spots, where they come from, how to get rid of them and what you need to know about babys skincare, we spoke to pharmacist Anshu Bhimbat from Lloyds Pharmacy.

Give Your Newborn Plenty Of Fluids

On average, newborns need to eat every 90 to 120 minutes. And the only thing babies can consume in their first few months of life is breast milk and/or baby formula. These liquids contain all the nutrients your bundle of joy needs to stay healthy and continue growing.

That said, make sure youre feeding your baby often enough. This will not only keep your baby healthy and happy, but it will also ensure that theyre hydrated. A well-hydrated baby means well-hydrated skin, which can help clear up any peeling.

Care Advice For Newborn Rashes And Birthmarks

  • Acne:
  • More than 30 percent of newborns develop baby acne of the face. Acne consists of small red bumps.
  • This baby acne begins at 2 to 4 weeks of age. It lasts until 4 to 6 months of age.
  • The cause appears to be the transfer of maternal hormones just prior to birth.
  • Since it goes away on its own, no treatment is needed. Baby oil or ointments make it worse.
  • Drooling or Spit-up Rash:
  • Many babies have a rash on the chin or cheeks that comes and goes. This is often due to contact with food. It’s more common after starting baby foods. In newborns, it can also be from stomach acid that has been spit up. Prolonged contact with spit-up during sleep can cause the rash to get worse.
  • Other temporary rashes on the face are heat rashes. These can occur in areas held against the mother’s skin during nursing. Heat rashes are more common in the summertime.
  • Rinse the face with water after all feedings or spitting up. During hot weather, change the baby’s position more often. Also, put a cool wet washcloth on the rash. Do this for 10 minutes.
  • Erythema Toxicum:
  • More than 50 percent of babies get a rash called erythema toxicum. It starts on the second or third day of life.
  • It’s a harmless baby rash that doesn’t need to be seen.

Do I Need To See A Doctor About Baby Acne

Usually, you wont need to see a doctor about baby acne. However, you may want to see a doctor if baby’s acne lasts for several months. Your doctor may prescribe a treatment to help clear babys acne.

The American Academy of Dermatology also recommends seeing a doctor if baby acne begins when baby is over 6 weeks old. This is much less common than neonatal acne. It may be a sign of another health problem, or a sign that a product youre using is irritating the skin on babys face. Or, what is thought to be acne at this stage might not be acne at all.

If it is acne, though, and develops after six weeks of age, its known as infantile acne . Infantile acne usually appears between 3 and 6 months of age. Unlike neonatal acne, it can sometimes cause blackheads, and could potentially cause a scar. But fortunately, this type of acne often clears up on its own as well .

You should also see a doctor if your babys acne seems infected. Excessive swelling, excessive redness, discharge, and fever may be signs of infection.

And of course, if you suspect that babys facial rash is caused by eczema or an allergy , be sure to let your doctor know.

When To Take The Baby To A Doctor

Baby acne is not fatal and should not be a source of constant worrying. But there are certain situations in which you must promptly bring the condition under medical supervision:

    • If the acne is too brightly red and oozes a clear discharge.
    • If the acne has yellowish heads, indicating pus formation that occurs when there is a bacterial invasion of the blister.
    • When the baby is in extreme discomfort due to the acne. He repeatedly cries while trying to scratch the acne.
    • When the baby acne is accompanied by high fever, indicating an infection.
    • If you suspect it is something beyond baby acne, a skin problem such as eczema.

An inspection of the acne by a doctor can help make an accurate diagnosis of the condition.

    How Are Milia Treated

Milia usually are not treated, because they are not harmful. Adolescents and adults might be concerned about what milia do to their appearance. In these cases, there are ways that a doctor can remove them. These include medical therapies such as regular application of adapalene gel which is over the counter or tretinoin cream which is a prescription. There are also surgical options which may involve using a needle to puncture the milia and squeezing out the contents, and/or cryotherapy, which is a technique that involves freezing the skin. Milia en plaque can sometimes be successfully treated with medicated creams or an antibiotic called minocycline.

You should not try to squeeze or scrape off milia on your own, as you might do with a pimple. This can scar the skin or cause an infection. But there are things you can do at home that can help:

    • Wash your babys face every day with warm water and gentle soap. Then dry it very gently. Pat the skin dry, do not rub.
    • Do not use lotions or oils that are meant for adults on a baby. Infant skin is too delicate.
    • Adults might try an over-the-counter treatment to exfoliate the skin, which means removing dead skin.
    • Use sunscreen.
